Current work of the MDT
(January (Sept. 2024)
In recent months, the Matrix Development Team (MDT) has seen significant progress as it adapts to global expansion and increasing demands.
To support our vision of "Transforming the economy," we are and to meet these challenges we have been professionalising our structures, teams, and processes.
The MDT, responsible for developing and updating the ECG-Matrix, is responding to new regulatory requirements like the EU CSRD, internationalisation, and digitalisation.
Feedback from companies, consultants, and auditors is guiding these updates, ensuring the Matrix remains relevant and effective.
To meet these challenges, we will introduce new professional teams in the coming months to implement the latest products.
Additionally, from September, Stakeholder Circles will be established to gather targeted feedback, helping us refine the Matrix and better serve our global community.
After an intensive development and selection process, we are currently setting up new teams to begin work in the updated structure.
An online training programme for version 5.1 will be offered for interested Consultants and Auditors in English in the ECG-Academy, starting September 2024.
Please contact our stakeholder Team (see below).

Training 5.1
The goal of this iteration was to incorporate feedback, prepare processes for a digital workbook, and to improve the reporting template.
The main changes in the updated version of the ECG standard are as follows:
- Terminology: The terms "company" and "firm" have been replaced with "organisation" throughout the standard. This is to make the standard more inclusive and to reflect the fact that not all organizations are profit-making entities.
- Clarity and consistency: The language of the standard has been made more clear and consistent throughout, and some of the questions have been rephrased for better understanding.
- Life cycle perspective: The importance of considering the entire life cycle of a product or service, from raw materials to disposal, has been emphasized throughout the standard. This is to ensure that organizations take into account the environmental and social impacts of their entire operations.
- New topics: Several new topics have been added to the standard, including biodiversity, circularity and cradle to cradle, eco-efficiency and eco-effectiveness, and sufficiency.
- Verification indicators: Verification indicators have been added to some of the aspects of the standard to help organizations assess their performance more accurately.
The team will provide material provided by the ECG-Academy that explains the changes.
An online training programme for version 5.1 is available through the ECG Academy, designed specifically for Consultants and Auditors.
This course, offered in English, provides a quick and comprehensive overview of the Matrix updates and improvements.

Matrix Development Team
Marta Avesani, Wolfram Sommer, Monika Culka
Work on Matrix 6.0
The new team began its work in mid-September 2024.
Phase 1 focuses on Transverse Projects (TPs)—key initiatives chosen to address movement priorities.
These projects serve as a foundation for our work, with updates available on the TP Wiki page.
Phase 2 will take a Matrix Theme Perspective, integrating the outcomes of the TPs into a cohesive and strategic framework for the Matrix's future development.
Current Workflow
For each project, we:
- Start with a kick-off workshop in the P1 team.
- Develop proposal(s).
- Share with Stakeholders (SH) leads for feedback.
- Incorporate input and refine the proposal.
- Implement once approved.
Follow our progress on the TP Wiki page.

Monika Culka, Renata Sommer
Objective:
Our Team 2 develops scalable reporting solutions for entities aiming to report a full or compact CGBS and/or comply with the voluntary VSME standard, set for publication by EFRAG on December 20, 2024. Implementation guidance and basis for conclusion documents are expected by January 2025.
Team Composition:
The team, comprising Renata Sommer and Monika Culka, collaborates closely with our Matrix Core Team (P1), SH teams, and MDT-IT (Gerrit Elbrink) to ensure solutions are digital, scalable, and synergistic.
The team is contracted until July 31, 2025.

The ECG-ESRS Team (P3)
The mapping for Product 3 (ECG M5.1 and ESRS) has been developed by a dedicated working group, demonstrating independent initiative and expertise. To ensure consistency and coherence, the MDT (Team 1) will review and verify the mapping, in collaboration with the working group and IT partners.
The mapping process follows a structured approach, categorising content into four key groups:
- Identical content,
- Similar content (rephrased or contextualised),
- Related but not identical content, and
- Gaps where no direct correspondence exists, requiring customer input.
Product 3 builds on the functionality of a third-party software solution, serving as an extension to support ECG and ESRS reporting formats. Its success relies on close collaboration and ongoing alignment with our external software partners.

The Stakeholder Team
Sabine Lehner, Renata Sommer, Carlos Adolfo Viale
The Stakeholder Team in the MDT serves as a vital link between the content developed by our Content Developers and the knowledge and expertise of our stakeholders. The team aims to ensure a seamless integration of stakeholder insights into the development process to enhance the quality and effectiveness of our work.
The team actively reaches out to experts who are engaged with the matrix in various capacities—whether they support companies during balancing processes, conduct balance audits, or bring other relevant expertise. Their input is invaluable in providing feedback throughout this process.
A structured and transparent feedback process lies at the core of this collaboration. Regular feedback sessions are held, and all responses are systematically reviewed and shared with the development team for implementation. This approach fosters a continuous improvement cycle and ensures that the outcomes are both practical and impactful.
Be one of our Stakeholders
Through this process, we aim to establish an effective and high-quality collaboration with our stakeholders.
If you are interested in contributing as a committed stakeholder due to your expertise and experience in sustainability reporting, balancing processes, and methods, and you have not yet been directly approached, we kindly ask you to fill out the following survey.
